How Renault KWID offer the best value proposition in hatchback segment?

Hatchbacks or “small cars” as they are commonly referred to in India, constitute the largest share of the country’s automobile industry. If one considers the sales data for June 2019, five of the top 10 selling vehicles are entry and mid-level hatchbacks. Over the years, the gap between compact SUVs and hatchbacks has been bridged, and this is visible with the towering presence of the Renault KWID in the latter segment. Often regarded as one of the best small cars with good ground clearance, the Renault KWID has found plenty of buyers because of its supreme value propositions.
There is no doubt that the French automaker has delved deep into the psyches of Indian buyers to understand what they want from the hatchback segment.

Renault KWID’s class-leading ground clearance at 180 mm is more than sufficient to traverse different terrains in India. The shock absorbers keep you fully composed even on the most undulating roads, unlike other hatchbacks where intermittent mild jerks are common. Like others in this segment such as Maruti Alto and WagonR, the KWID also comes with two engine options: 0.8 L and 1.0 L—both are advantageous for driving on the city roads in India.
While describing the positive points of the KWID, this article would be incomplete without highlighting its massive boot. Despite being a hatchback, the KWID has a total space of 300L for luggage. Compare this to a measly 180 L in the Maruti WagonR, despite its tallboy design. Whether you wish to carry luggage pieces for a family of four, or embark on a long-distance trip, the KWID can do both with equal panache and with ease.
The KWID also offers decent fuel efficiency, delivering 25.17 kmpl as per standard test conditions. In the long term, it certainly proves to be very economical. Although the car looks heavier than other small cars with good ground clearance, you will be surprised to know that it is actually lighter than the Maruti Alto is. While the Kwid weighs 630-710 kg, the Alto’s kerb weight is 730-762 kg. However, in terms of acceleration from zero to 100 kmph, the Alto K10 is marginally quicker than the KWID 1.0.
The Alto K10 comes with an automated manual transmission (AMT) and the KWID 1.0 comes with the Easy-R technology, which comes with a dash mounted AMT dial with three driving modes. This is the easiest and most affordable type of automatic transmission in the market today. Driving the KWID through traffic has certainly become a breeze after the availability of this transmission option.
